# Tags

> Organize your files, folders, and waypoints with customizable tags

Tags help you organize and categorize your files, folders, and waypoints. Create custom tags with colors to quickly find and filter related items.

## Managing Tags

### Opening Tag Settings

Access tag management from:

* **Settings > Tags** in the menu
* The Tags tab in the right panel

### Creating Tags

1. Open Tag Settings
2. Enter a name for your tag
3. Select a color from the palette
4. Click **Create Tag**

A preview shows how your tag will appear before you create it.

### Editing Tags

Click on any existing tag to open the edit dialog where you can:

* **Rename** - Change the tag name
* **Change Color** - Select a new color
* **View Usage** - See how many files, folders, and waypoints use this tag
* **Delete** - Remove the tag entirely

  Deleting a tag removes it from all items where it's assigned. This action cannot be undone.

## Assigning Tags

### From the Edit Menu

1. Select one or more items in the [File Tree](/docs/app/file-tree)
2. Choose **Edit > Assign Tag**
3. Select tags to add or remove

### From Context Menu

Right-click any item and select **Assign Tag** to quickly add or remove tags.

### From the Info Panel

Open the [Info Panel](/docs/app/info-panel) for any item to view and manage its tags directly.

## Using Tags

### Filtering by Tag

In the Tags view (right panel), click on a tag to filter and show only items with that tag assigned.

### Tag Colors

Choose from a variety of colors to visually distinguish tag categories:

* Use consistent colors for similar categories (e.g., blue for work trips, green for hiking)
* Colors appear as badges throughout the interface
* Tags are sorted by name in lists

### Where Tags Can Be Used

Tags can be assigned to:

* **Files** - Tag individual GPX routes
* **Folders** - Tag groups of related files
* **Waypoints** - Tag specific locations within routes

  Use tags for trip planning by creating tags like "Must Visit", "Completed", or "2024 Trip" to organize your routes.

## Tag Display

Tags appear as colored badges:

* In the File Tree next to item names
* In the Info Panel
* In search results
* When filtering by tag

Multiple tags on a single item display in a compact, overflow-aware layout that expands on hover.
