# Media

> Attach photos and videos to your files, folders, and waypoints. Show your photos on the map where they were taken.

Rendzo allows you to attach photos and videos to your files, folders, and waypoints, creating a rich visual record of your adventures.

## Uploading Media

### Drag and Drop

The easiest way to add media is to drag files directly into the media gallery area. Supported formats include:

* **Images:** JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP

**Maximum file size:** 50MB per file

### Upload Button

Click the upload button <Icon icon="upload" iconType="solid" /> to open a file picker and select media from your device.

### Embed Videos

Click the link button <Icon icon="link" iconType="solid" /> to embed videos from:

* **YouTube** - Paste any YouTube video URL
* **Vimeo** - Paste any Vimeo video URL

Embedded videos display as thumbnails and play within Rendzo.

### Select from Library

Click the gallery button <Icon icon="images" iconType="solid" /> to attach existing media from your library to the current item.

## Media Gallery

### View Modes

Switch between three display modes:

* **Grid View** <Icon icon="grid-2" iconType="solid" /> - Larger thumbnails in a grid layout
* **List View** <Icon icon="list" iconType="solid" /> - Compact list with thumbnails, names, and quick actions
* **Hierarchy View** <Icon icon="sitemap" iconType="solid" /> - In the Dashboard Media area, see every photo nested under the folder, file, or waypoint it's attached to. Photos attached to multiple places show up under each one.

### Media Actions

Hover over any media item to reveal action buttons:

* **View** <Icon icon="expand" iconType="solid" /> - Open in full-screen viewer
* **Set as Cover** <Icon icon="heart" iconType="solid" /> - Make this the cover photo
* **Place on Map** <Icon icon="map-pin" iconType="solid" /> - Add location to display on map
* **Remove from Map** - Remove location data
* **Unlink** <Icon icon="link-slash" iconType="solid" /> - Remove from this item (keeps in library)
* **Delete** <Icon icon="trash" iconType="solid" /> - Permanently delete

## Cover Photos

Set a cover photo to represent a file, folder, or waypoint visually throughout the app.

1. Upload or select an image
2. Click the heart ❤️ icon or select "Set as Cover"
3. The cover photo appears in the Info Panel, and as the "key" photo when hovering over a waypoint.

<Tip>
  When uploading to a waypoint in [Image Mode](/docs/tools/waypoints#image-mode), the first uploaded image is automatically set as the cover.
</Tip>

## Placing Photos on Map

Photos with GPS coordinates can be displayed as markers on the map:

### Auto-Geocoding

When uploading photos with embedded GPS data (EXIF), Rendzo can automatically extract and use the location and place the image on the map at that location. Enable this in your settings.

### Manual Placement

For photos without GPS data:

1. Click **Place on Map** <Icon icon="map-pin" iconType="solid" />
2. Click the desired location on the map
3. The photo marker appears at that location

### Photo Markers

Photos placed on the map display as circular or retangle thumbnails. Click a marker to view the full image.

Toggle photo visibility on the map with **View > Media** or press `F7`.

## Media Viewer

Click any media item to open the full-screen viewer:

* **Navigate** - Use arrow keys or swipe to move between items
* **Zoom** - Scroll or pinch to zoom images
* **Close** - Press `Escape` or click outside

## Where Media Can Be Attached

Media can be attached to:

* **Files** - Route-level photos and videos
* **Folders** - Group-level media
* **Waypoints** - Location-specific photos

A single photo can be attached to any number of folders, files, and waypoints at once — a trip photo can live under the trip folder, the day's GPX file, *and* the lunch-stop waypoint all at the same time. Each context maintains its own media gallery with independent ordering and cover photo settings.

## Managing Photo Associations

From the Dashboard's **Media** area you can see and change every place a photo is attached.

### For one photo

* **Right-click** a photo and choose **Manage associations…**, or
* Click the photo's **Association** cell in List view

A dialog opens listing every folder, file, and waypoint the photo is attached to. Click the × next to any attachment to remove it, or click **Add association** to open a picker and attach the photo somewhere new.

### For many photos at once

1. Select photos using the checkboxes in List view
2. Click the <Icon icon="link" iconType="solid" /> link icon in the selection action bar
3. Pick a folder, file, or waypoint from the tree

Every selected photo is attached to the chosen target. Existing attachments are preserved — this adds, it never replaces.

<Tip>
  Expand a file in the picker to attach a photo to a specific waypoint. Waypoint names come from your GPX files, so you'll see real labels like "Lunch stop" rather than "Waypoint #3".
</Tip>

<Note>
  Media is stored in your Rendzo cloud account and is available on all your devices. Storage limits depend on your subscription plan.
